Why did Zac Efron turn down the opportunity to star in the remake of ‘Footloose’? The former ‘High School Musical’ star reveals his decision to stretch his wings with the emotionally charged drama ‘Charlie St. Cloud’ to our own Kevin Frazier.

“There are so many factors that go into it; it was not an easy decision,” says Zac of his choice not to remain on the ‘Footloose’ project. “After going that direction for a long time with ‘High School Musical,’ this seemed like the more interesting choice — and the more difficult choice, ultimately — and I’m having a blast doing this.”

In ‘Charlie St. Cloud,’ in theaters July 30, Zac plays a young man who struggles to get over the loss of his younger brother when tragedy strikes. But it wasn’t all that serious on the Vancouver set when Kevin came over to visit. When not working on the incredible forest set on a soundstage, Zac had a blast learning to sail – and we even caught him doing a backflip off the boat!

“It’s outstanding — it’s a beautiful sport and so underrated,” says Zac of sailing.

Amanda Crew plays Zac’s love interest in the movie, and she reveals, “Yeah, there’s a little love scene — I think it was both our first times.”

Interestly, Zac’s real-life girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens was also doing a movie in Vancouver — at the same studio!

“It’s great — she’s a couple of stages away,” says Zac, adding, “No, we didn’t plan it. I don’t know how it happened!”
