Actually, I suspect that he is even smarter than he lets on. His interview manner is all laid-back California and slangy, but occasionally he pops out a word or phrase that suggests his vocabulary is far more elevated than he chooses to use in the popular media. I think he could hold his own in far more intellectual discussions than we see during his promo tours.

Like when he used to word "sublime" at the People's Choice Awards this past year? I was like no one says words like that anymore, he must be really smart.

Exactly. It's nothing obvious, but he will occasionally use words that one expects to see in a book, not hear in common conversation. He will also use Latin or French phrases that are literary, not conversational.

I've never seen any reference to Zac being in a band. In school, he was involved in speech competitions, and his community theater and then TV/movie acting kept him very busy.

Is it true he was on the debate team in school?
If so, that explains why he talks to eloquently in interviews and giving speeches at award shows.

I don't know about debate team, but Zac and a partner placed second in the Berkeley International Speech Tournament. He was also in a improv group that won top honors in the worldwide Destination ImagiNation program.
