The Hairspray producers explain, in the bonus stuff on the deluxe DVD set, that Travolta turned down parts in later musicals because he was waiting for a role that would be "worthy" of following Grease. I loved John Travolta in Hairspray. It was Zac, then John, then Michelle, and then Amanda that were my favorites in the movie
