There really was a young guy cast in the play like the character Zac plays, but the rest of the story is fiction.

By "the rest of the story" I mean the interaction between the characters. Orson Welles and the named actors in the movie did do the play Julius Caesar at the Mercury Theater in NYC in 1937. But the young guy didn't have all the adventures (sleeping with the office girl in Welles' apartment, setting off the sprinkler system, and all that).
