17 Again was planned as a "transition" for Zac to get out of musicals. He has said that he wouldn't sign up for HSM3 until he had established himself in another kind of role. I think they thought this movie would be successful -- most good teen comedies are. But they were probably pleasantly surprised when it earned $136 million, which is quite high for this kind of movie. This may have been both good and bad. It was very good for establishing Zac as someone who could star in a successful non-musical movie, he needed that validation. But it was probably bad because it was too successful -- it gave the impression that he could star in a movie and pull big office by himself. Me & Orson Welles and Charlie St. Cloud proved that idea was wrong.

oh i see. but still, who knows, zac's new movies are going to be a big hit. csc didn't turn out well because it wasn't promoted fully

I have high hopes for The Paperboy. As a "sexy thriller" with recognized performers like Matt McC, Nicole K, and John C, it should be able to find a decent distributor and appeal to conventional movie audiences. The Untitled Bahrani Project is more questionable. The farming angle doesn't appeal to any genre audience, but maybe the auto racing will balance that out. But the director, while highly praised by some critics, is a bit off-beat and the style of the movie may not have real commercial appeal. Let's hope for the best.

I agree, but Me and Orson Welles didn't have a large distribution like 17 Again or Charllie St. Cloud.

even if csc wasn't a good box office movie at least zac gained fans which makes them watch his upcoming films.

But even if zac movies are sucessful or even if they bomb i will love them. i know that sounds stupid or me being an over zealous fan. i enjoy zac's acting so much that it wouldnt matter whether his movies were sucessful or not.

It will matter to Zac, and to you too in the long run, because if he doesn't have an occasional hit, he won't be working in movies for very long. If you want to see lots more Zac Efron movies, pray for hits, not bombs.
