Fraternities provide a very valuable learning experience for young men (and women, who have sororities). Learning leadership skills and how to work in groups isn't something they teach in class. Most U.S. presidents (at least, the ones who went to college) are fraternity alumni, most Senators, business leaders, etc. Of course, the rowdy stuff also arises when you put a group of young males together. That's all that the public sees, so fraternities have a generally bad reputation among non-members.
