Wrong, it was a good thing. Zac was just one of several supporting characters in this series, which wasn't even on a major network. If he had stuck with this, he wouldn't have been able to start his movie career. For example, he would have been shooting the third season of
Summerland instead of performing in
Hairspray -- just like Sophia Vergara, who had to drop out of
The Paperboy because she was locked into her TV series and they had to start shooting the new season.

Each
Summerland season started shooting in late September, so Zac would have been OK doing
HSM in July 2005 (he was actually in Salt Lake City filming
HSM when the final new episode of
Summerland aired). But if he had continued in the TV series he would have missed a lot of the
HSM promotional stuff and, as I said, he would not have been available for
Hairspray.
