There has been no indication at all that he is playing a gay character. "Mystical hippie" was the description.

You guys have got to keep up with your homework. See post #9 for why he is listed first on the IMDb cast listing, see #26 to learn that he appears in a "party scene," and #37 for a description of his role as a "mystical hippie."
