Just putting this out there folks:

Simon Cowell wants Saturday Night Fever
People News

Simon Cowell is set to remake 'Saturday Night Fever'.
The music mogul is in talks with film producer Robert Stigwood, who owns the rights to the screenplay, to update the classic 1977 John Travolta movie and wants Zac Efron for the lead role.

A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Simon has been looking into buying the rights for years and opened discussions with Robert about the remake.
"The charm offensive has been in full swing and they made a breakthrough over the last couple of weeks. Robert was keen to get some assurances the original wouldn't be completely butchered before he agreed to the deal.

"Simon has been drawing up a list of people he wants to get involved. When that meets Robert's expectations, the contracts will be signed."

Hip-hop producer Timbaland is in the frame to rework the classic soundtrack, which topped the US charts for a massive 24 weeks when it was released.
The soundtrack featured a host of classic disco songs by The Bee Gees, including 'Stayin' Alive', 'More Than A Woman' and 'Night Fever'.
The movie tells the story of New York teenager Tony Manero - played by Travolta - who is a hit on the dance floor but unsuccessful in the rest of his life.

O.M.G! Please let this not be true.
Why remake what is already a classic film and still a classic album.

I hope Zac does not do this.

If you want to watch SNF go see the original, there is a non 18 version available (or there was).

Agreed, Satuday Night Fever should NOT be remade. I'm a firm believer that Footloose should not be remade as well.

To all: I'd like to point out that this is a Simon Cowell 'wish list', if you will, and does not say that Zac has been approached. Just that he's on Cowell's list. Zac is already locked in for Charlie St. Cloud and apparently Johnny Quest (which I'm still not sold on) and I doubt Zac will be ready to return to the Musical genre that quickly. If he does, in my opinion it would be more likely he'd do another Hairspray before doing SNF.

Personally I don't think Zac should touch anything that has Simon Cowell's name attached to it, now or ever!

Haha. Good point. You know, I never even drew the connection until now that Cowell would then have Zac for a label contract. Talk about your work around on that. Cowell had supposedly offered him a deal and Zac 'turned him down,' as it were.

Good point.

This is the man who made his name and money from UK reality TV shows. Enough said!!

Again, let's be clear, this was not Zac saying anything, this was Simon Cowell putting him on a "wish list" for the lead in the movie. Doesn't mean he is or is not doing this.

Just thought I'd clear that up again.

is it really necessary to remake everything??? seriously..
but let's see if it's even done

I agree with that. Hollywood is seriously running out of ideas, or it's a case of let's just rip off 70's and 80's movies for remakes.

What with Fame coming round again, and Footloose is there no end to it!

I really hope this is just a rumour and does not happen.

Well, we seem to be entering an era of remakes in Hollywood. I don't think there's a lack of new or good ideas; however, in the same hand I don't think there's a dirth of them either.

Which is why I fully expect to see another Indiana Jones movie made in the next year or so simply because it's a good franchise and still makes money AND they aren't simply re-hashing some movie that was done before.

Ugh, all one need do is look at the terrible 're-hashing' of the Posiedon Adventure in Posiedon and we could see where the trend was going (that was just a miserable movie and I even left mid-way through). I'd say 8 times out of 10 these remakes or re-hashings are never up to par with the original or just fail miserably.

I always used to think that some movies/ franchises were untouchable, now anything is possible.

You are actually admitting to paying good money to watch Posiedon Adventure!!:)

Any good film made is a statement of that decade, Saturday Night Fever is the 1970's, it can't be transported into this decade or the next and still be SNF even if they kept the Bee Gees music, which I doubt.

The album is on my iPod, it's fantastic.

yea right, they're just throwing his name in there. come on they know he wouldn't take it after he turned down Footloose
I love Saturday Night Fever :D but a remake No and Zac for it hell NO!
Zac should just run as far away from this as he can
this would be a BAD, bad move for him:

It was a good idea on their part to slip Zac's name on a wish list, knowing it would receive publicity!

I would pay good money to see The Posiedon Adventure on the big screen. I wasn't alive when it came out, so I only know it from watching it on TV and VHS and now DVD. I used to torture my babysitters by watching it over and over and over. I went to go see Posiedon (the 're-hashing') just to give it a shot and I was so disappointed.

Your point about a movie being a statement of it's decade is so true. SNF cannot and should not be brought into this time, nor is it still realavent and like you said, any attempt to do so is not SNF, but a new movie. I personally think that applies to Footloose too. Footloose was done at a time when dancing and loud music was shunned in certain parts of the country. That's all gone now (to an extent). You are so right with movies being a part of times in which they are made.

And the soundtrack is classic. I used to think it was torture when I'd be home and my mom would make me watch it, but now I love the movie and I'm 24.

Well, it wasn't really a good idea, i mean if they wanted proper publicity they'd add a name like Leo Di Caprio or Brad Pitt but i suppose they're aiming this article at 14 year old girls

It worked didn't it. I think there would be more shock value in having DiCaprio or Pitt listed in a musical. Zac's name bring publicity simply for the fact that he was/is still considered to be a musical machine even though he's said he's stepping away from them right now.

It created the buzz that it wanted and I'm not a 14 year old girl.

I know you meant the remade Posiedon Adventure and not the original which is a very good film. :)

Back on topic. It's interesting you calling this a musical as I did wonder if the remake, if it happens will be of the original film which is so not a musical, it's a film with a fantastic soundtrack.

Or are they going to make a film of the musical which was on in the West End in 2000, and I think also on Broadway.

If they want to make this for a family audience than I would expect a film of the show, as the original SNF was an 18 certificate due to it's content, swearing and the subject's it covered. We do sometimes forget that SNF was actually a dark film set in the disco craze of the 1970's.

TheWayYouMakeMeFeel
06-09-2009, 01:13 PM
SNF lol.
I love the film all that but I just don't think the remake of it would be better I mean cmon John Travolta did really good in that movie :D and seriously to be honest no one can replace him.
But I would to see Zac in Travolta's shoes haha.

Exactly and I have no idea. People now adays consider any movie with a good soundtrack and dancing to be a musical. I don't consider the original to be a musical and I didn't even know they did make one.

Oh and on Posiedon Adventure, sorry, again got my thoughts confuzzled.

The stage show was great, I saw it in London. The Bee Gees were involved with it which explains why it was good.

The themes within the story had to be watered down of course. I don't think that young children should have been taken to see it, as did happen.

The songs from the soundtrack were kept and woven into the story, the cast sang them through the show.

I seen Saturday Night Fever and the opening of it is when John Travolta struts down the street with the, "Staying Alive" song by the Bee Gees playing.
LMAO but with this Zac will have to dye his hair again lol.
and also has to get advice from John Travolta.

I kinda get the feeling that any remake will not be set to a disco soundtrack.
The 70's and early 80's were the disco era, but not now.
