'High School Musical' star won't be appearing in Marblehead

MARBLEHEAD - Zac Efron, heartthrob star of "High School Musical" 1, 2 and 3 and "17 Again," won't be coming to Marblehead anytime soon.

Ephron has been mentioned for the lead role in the movie version of Ben Sherwood's novel "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud," which takes place in Marblehead.

Charlie is the caretaker at Waterside Cemetery, haunted by the ghost of his younger brother as he tries desperately to save the life of his sailor girlfriend. The book, Sherwood's second novel, has been praised for tackling themes of death, love and forgiveness and rumors have been flying about the filming all winter.

Selectman William Woodfin broke the sad news Wednesday.

"They're not coming to Marblehead to make the film," he said. Referring to a lot of discussion in Hollywood about the artistic integrity of the project and the current state of the economy, Woodfin said the final decision was to film in Vancouver. Vancouver is on the Pacific Coast in British Columbia, about as far from Marblehead as the filmmakers can get.

"Universal Pictures looked at the bottom line and said it's not going to happen," Woodfin summed up. "Vancouver is not going to look like Marblehead."
"Given the state of the economy Universal should have stayed here," said Selectman Judy Jacobi.

Town Administrator Tony Sasso credited Woodfin with a Herculean telephone effort on behalf of Marblehead as a film location. In fact, when asked Thursday who was going to star in the film Sasso said, "Bill Woodfin."

Well, film companies don't set up location shoots based on their actor's relationships.

Even if Zac were to be filming in Marblehead, he'd be in a completely different country. Same time zone, different country. If there movies are filming congruently (at the same time) then I highly doubt either one will be able to visit the other on their respective sets. Vanessa's is a TV movie I do believe, Zac's isn't.

I think Zac's career is taking off. Vanessa is just now trying to get her's going. Unfortunately she is far more famous for her relationship with Zac than for her acting. Now I know some don't like them as a couple, I personally think they make a great couple, but that is my opinion.

They are both adults and both in a tough industry. They've both had to do gigs where one hasn't seen the other for long stretches of time. As beee said, they can't be together 24/7.

And he filmed Hairspray in Toronto for what 4 months (ish)? It's not a big deal. People understand that their jobs take them away from eachother for long stretches of time. Some have postulated that they are spending some quiet time together right now in preparation for their long time apart in the coming months. Whether this is true or not, I don't know.

They are both adults and they both realize the nature of the industry that they work in. I'm not saying they won't see each other, I'm sure that if one has a day off from filming maybe they make the long trek to see the other. I'm not worried, so I'm not sure why you are.

I can't imagine Charlie St. Cloud will take more than a few months to film. It's a pretty straight forward movie for the most part. If they start in mid-July then they're probably done by no later than mid-to-late October, and I don't think it'll take that long. It'll probably wrap principle photography at some point in September. A lot has to do with how fast the rest of the cast comes together. We haven't heard anything about the other characters as of yet.

There were too many selections for getting him on. When I tried to select 'attached' IMDb didn't want to accept the change. Which is odd because the did so for Burr Steers. Their reason was, they don't like attaching an actor until a film is in production or an official announcement from the studio is made.

Look at Footloose. Zac was signed to that film and it was widely known, and yet they kept him on as 'rumored' and for a good reason. Though it took them forever to take him off that page.

The right casting is going to be very imprtant. They want to make sure each actor is the right 'fit' for that character.

then she's got Sucker Punch with THE Zack freaking Snyder..
and then theres rumors about her and DEAD @ 17 ..
