When Zac Efron landed in the UK recently, he sent the nation stir crazy.

As he walked down the red carpet in London’s Leicester Square for the premiere of his new comedy 17 Again, his piercing blue eyes and to-die-for looks were enough to send the crowd into a frenzy.

Trying to be heard above the screams from females – both young and old – the 21-year-old star said: ‘It’s insane! This is the biggest one yet. It’s crazy.’

However, unfortunately for the ladies, Zac has been happily dating fellow High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens ever since they first appeared together on screen back in January 2006.

Here, the Californian dreamboat reveals all about Vanessa, kids and befriending Leonardo DiCaprio…

What do you like so much about Vanessa Hudgens?
She’s funny and she’s very charismatic. She’s also very driven, she’s very focused and talented – I admire that in people.

Do you understand the phenomena surrounding you?
No, not at all. If anyone could see me in high school they would just laugh. It was a complete 180 from where I am right now.

Would you like to be 17 again?
No way! High school was such a different part of my life. It was great for a lot of reasons, but it also sucked for a lot of reasons. I’m in a different place now, but it seems like all the things I used to worry about back then were so miniscule.

Have you been back to your high school?
Yes, my little brother is there now, so every time I go home I drive by. It was falling apart when I was there but now it looks totally different. It’s like it’s all been remodelled.

There was a picture of you and Leonardo DiCaprio at a basketball game recently. Would you like his career?
It was a complete fluke that we were sat next to each other, but it turned out to be the best thing that happened to me that night. Leo was the first time that I really recognised fame in another person – I was in fifth grade and he was in every magazine for Titanic. I would look at him and think, what’s so great about that kid? I was jealous. I couldn’t help but hate the guy – but I’ve seen him in so many great performances – he’s an incredible actor.

Did he know who you were?
Yeah, I think so. At a game there are a million photographers on all sides, so he suggested we talk outside of the game – I’ll definitely take him up on it.

There’s a scene in 17 Again where condoms are being passed around the classroom and you give a speech about waiting until you’re in love. Is that how you feel?
Yeah, that’s what the character went through. He was on a very personal level, preaching from the heart, which was cool. That’s also what I was brought up to believe.

How do you deal with all those 14-year-old girls throwing themselves at you all the time?
It happens every day. I have great conversations with the girls that approach me, they get really excited! A lot of kids ask advice too, which is very flattering.

Do you get much attention from older women?
There are always moms. It’s actually more exciting – no I mean interesting – because you never know what’s going to happen. It’s an easier scenario with the kids, but the moms are almost motherly. They ask if I’m okay, and if I want to go get a bite to eat!

Would you like lots of kids one day?
The very idea is frightening me! Maybe it’s over-exposure at a young age to a lot of kids, but honestly, I’m just too selfish at the moment. I don’t have that longing yet. Eventually, maybe I will.

Do the press camp outside your house all the time?
Yeah, it’s really weird. I don’t want to come across like I’m preaching bad about that stuff, but it’s pretty annoying because there are so many.

Where do you see your career going?
I would love to try all different types of roles. The roles that are interesting to me change with every movie that I see. I was on an aeroplane recently and I watched Vicky Cristina Barcelona – I loved that movie! I could see myself doing a film like that. Then I’ll watch The Dark Knight and I want to be Christian Bale!

What about following in James Dean’s footsteps and exploring the darker sides of youth and young age?
Yeah, that would be fun. There’s also a lot of fun to be had in comedy, so I wouldn’t want to completely categorise myself right now.
