Exclusive Zac Efron: Why I said no to 'Footloose'

In about as polite a manner as he could muster, teenage heartthrob Zac Efron confessed to EW.com why he said no to the Footloose remake: He didn't want to be type-cast as the musical guy. In Las Vegas to receive the Showest Breakthrough Performer of the Year award, Efron confirmed what many in the industry had speculated. "I'm sure Footloose would have been a huge challenge," Efron said, "but the actors that I love and the actors that work really hard in this industry are always shaking things up, trying new genres, acquiring new skill sets. That's what's always going to appeal to me: the unknown." So Efron's trading in those dancing shoes for a shovel in The Death & Life of Charlie St. Cloud at Universal. Reuniting with 17 Again director Burr Stears, Efron will play a young man who takes a job as a cemetery caretaker where his younger brother has recently been buried. He has weekly meetings with his deceased sibling and begins a romantic relationship with a young woman believed to be missing in a sailing accident. He's not sure if she is real or an apparition.

I don't understand why Zac would drop out of Footloose, but (if he does) agree to do Hairspray 2. I would rather see Footloose than H2.

And I'm a little confused about something. The Footloose with Kevin Bacon was NOT a musical. Sure, it had dancing in it. That was the whole premise of the movie, but Kevin Bacon never sang and neither did anyone else. I don't understand how the remake is being typecast as a musical when it wasn't one in the first place.

wow the other moive is different and of course i can't wait to see it but
i am kinda sad that he is not doing footlose becasue i was looking forward to him
being in another musical besides HSM but this new movie is new and different and
something he hasn't done yet so i'm excited! :)

i wanted him to make Footloose. too bad he said no. i don't think he's being typecasted as a musical man. he has great movies that aren't musical now. look at 17 Again. i heard some people who went to the premiere that it was great! ♥♥♥

am not comparing but look at Dan Radcliffe...he's actually typecasted more...or everywhere people will recognise him as the boy who played Harry Potter. i don't think is like that. he's a great actor.

and it shows how much i wanted to see him in this remake of Footloose. :P

I didn't release until the other day that this will not be a remake of the Kevin Bacon film but the show/musical that was on stage in about 1993!

I don't remember it being on in the West End so have to assume it was on Broadway somewhere, but have no idea how long it ran for.
