Zac Efron is negotiating to re-team with "17 Again" director Burr Steers on an adaptation of the novel "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud."
The film will likely be the next for Efron, who just ankled Paramount's "Footloose" remake.
Former "Good Morning America" exec producer Ben Sherwood wrote the book, about a caretaker at a cemetery who manages to have weekly meetings with a younger brother whose accidental death he feels was his fault.
Marc Platt is producing, and while Efron's deal is still being negotiated, Steers is set and has already begun polishing a script originally written by Craig Pearce, with James Schamus and Lewis Colick also turning in drafts.
Production will begin in July. The Efron-Steers collaboration "17 Again" will be released by New Line/Warner Bros. on April 17.
Paramount is meeting other actors to topline the Kenny Ortega-directed "Footloose," which the studio still expects will be on its 2010 release schedule.
A script rewrite for "Footloose" was turned in by Susannah Grant, and the studio is firming up music plans. Four songs from the original film will be used, and six new tunes will be added, from various artists. The film will not be a burst-into-song musical, though the heroine in the new film will be a singer.

plus heres the book summary -
The Death & Life of Charlie St Cloud by Ben Sherwood
The Death & Life of Charlie St Cloud is a moving tale of what happens when people are taken from this world to the next and considers that death may not be the end. It’s about finding your soul mate when you least expect. Charlie St Cloud, a bright Massachusetts kid, is 15 when, driving without a licence and trying to race the moon, he crashes a car and kills his younger brother, Sam.
Haunted by his loss, and honouring a pledge never to leave Sam, he takes a job tending the cemetery where Sam lies buried. It is then he discovers he can see and talk to Sam’s ghost and, just like the good old days, the brothers play baseball together every evening without fail for 13 years. Then Charlie meets Tess, a stunning young yachtswoman, visiting her father’s grave, and in one deliciously seductive evening, falls in love with her.
When Tess goes missing at sea, Charlie has to choose between keeping his appointment with Sam, or breaking free to search for Tess and the chance of a future he longs to have with her.
The book urges the reader to really live life to the full, dive for dreams and allow for the possibility of miracles. You have to suspend disbelief for this novel, but if you do you will love it.
& heres another article about it -
The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood is so far the best book this reviewer has read this year. Reminiscent of Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Sherwood’s novel deals partly with death and what happens to us after we leave this earth. Unlike Albom's book, however, this one does not deal as much with whether one’s life was important and what mark a person left behind. Instead, Charlie’s story focuses on how one lets go of one’s loved ones, as well as learning how to move on.
Charlie St. Cloud was very close to his younger brother, Sam. The two were born out of wedlock, with different fathers, but with the love of their mother and a very strong brotherly bond, Sam and Charlie had a good life and were the best of friends. They did everything together and shared many interests including baseball. As well as being friends, Charlie also felt it was his duty to look after his younger brother.
Then one fateful day Charlie, Sam and their beloved dog, Oscar, are involved in an horrific automobile accident in which all three are pronounced dead. Charlie was fifteen and Sam was twelve. However, a fireman named Florio Ferrente is able to save one of them, and it happened to be Charlie. Florio, in fact, is the opening narrator of this novel, setting up the story about Charlie St. Cloud.
Thirteen years later, the reader is focused on a young woman who is about to take her first solo sailing trip around the world. This is her main goal in life, something that helps her forget about her father, who died two years ago. She has not yet learned to let go, and so she wraps herself around her work and her obsession with sailing. During a weekend sailing trip, she encounters a storm, and it is doubtful whether she will survive it.
The next scene finds Tess Carroll at the cemetery next to her father’s grave. It is there that she meets Charlie, who now earns a living at the cemetery, fulfilling a promise he made to Sam thirteen years ago. No matter what happened, Charlie promised, he would never leave Sam.
Tess and Charlie go out on a date, and it seems that their relationship may be on the verge of something more than just a simple friendship until Charlie receives bad news about Tess. He is now torn by his love for Sam and the life he has made for himself, and the need to have Tess in his life.
This was definitely a five-star-hanky book. As emotional as Albom’s books, The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud is a wonderfully crafted novel and Ben Sherwood does a fantastic job at creating this “world” that Charlie lives in, pulling one’s heartstrings. The book makes one question what really happens to our loved ones after they have passed on, but also makes us appreciate what little time we have on this earth. Whether there is a god or not, The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud may make a believer out of the most doubtful agnostic or atheist. This reviewer gives this book five stars and will most likely count it as one of her favorite books read in 2005.
BTW IS THIS THE RIGHT SECTION? i didnt know if it would go under projects or rumors since as of now, it is just a rumored potential role.

from the sounds of it, zacs character would be the 15 year old other brother, charlie.
i would think they are going to get a younger guy to play zacs character at 15 and then it skips to when hes in his 20s and then im guessing thats when zac would step in.

i doubt hes been auditioning for very many things right now and directors obviously want to work with him again which is a compliment to him. plus if they give him good opportunities than why not. he has years to try and work with other directors.

@AFRICA
well usually the directors already know the actor and they know what they're capable of so that's their first choice usually. But I've read that book and it sounds like an OK part for him. If I were picking the cast though, he wouldn't be my first choice

Steven Speilberg and Tom Hanks have worked on many productions. You have anything to say about his career? Directors will often times seek out actors they know because they know what they can bring to a film.
As for this movie, I like the idea. It's a good role and should provide for some nice drama in it. The role of Charlie would definitely push Zac and allow him to show a full range of acting. For those who think this is going to be a horror flick, it's not. All one need do is read the synopsis of the book and you can see that it's not a horror flick.

According to what has been published, he's in negotiations. I would be surprised if he didn't get it given it's being directed by the same guy who did 17 Again and they both enjoyed working together.

Now I can see why he would drop Footloose...this sounds like an amazing film...
Maybe not the kind of 'mainstream' stuff you would expect of him but he has made it clear he's not in it for the fame so it would be nice to see him try something totally different.

I read the book and it's a lovely story. It is interesting as you actually think the story is one thing but turns out to be something else. It should come under the heading romance.
I think Zac would be great in this, he will certainly have to grow up for the film as Charlie in the book is 28, so I did wonder to start off with how they could make him younger, but I think it will work.

I know part of the story takes place in and around Boston Massachusetts. We don't know any details about what the movie is going to be like.
I'm really hoping they keep it set in Massachusetts and keep the reason for Sam's death. If they do all that, then I really want them to come and film it here in New England.
So many films have tried to replicate New England's landscape, and you just can't do it with drop in shots and what not. Plus, if they keep the premise for Sam's death, you can't recreate Fenway Park on a sound stage. Sure, they'd have to CG out some of the more modern updates to the park, but that wouldn't be hard at all.
I just want him to do the film, and for the film to be filmed where it is set in the book.

I think they'll probably re-work the story a little to try and keep the character's age in Zac's age range. These are must my thoughts.
I hope they keep it set in New England as what leads to the accident is actually pretty important. I haven't yet recieved my copy, but I have been able to read a little online.

I'm not sure you can read the whole thing online anywhere. Amazon.com will let you read a few pages on their preview page for it. Here's an address:

I agree it really is a great story. I wonder what age they will make the main female character, as now I don't think she can be younger than Charlie and still keep her story the same, and her story is pivotal to the whole book.
It will be interesting to see what they do. She could just about be the same age, if not a year or two older as Charlie will have to be 22/23 at least.

Yeah, I'm thinking they're going to be fudging around with the character's age and the timeline of the story itself. I don't think Zac is at the age where he could physically pull off a 28 year old. they'll probably bring the ages down, like you sad, into the early/mid twenties.
I'm wondering, you do you see as playing the female lead? No one's really coming to mind right now.

Tess doesn't really come off as a "girly girl" in the book, and all of those are really 'girly girls'. Then again, a good makeup person can do wonders.

I wonder if they will go for an unknown, as she has got to be early to mid twenties. Other than that I can't think of anyone.
I don't mind them lowering the age of Charlie. In the book I can totally accept how he has lived for 13 years with his brother, but turning him into a real person it could be harder to carry off that story as a film will loose description and narrative the book can give us and you don't want the audience thinking how did he get away with that for so long.

Tess will be a tough casting choice
my best bet is that they'll go for a lesser known actress
they'll probably make Charlie a little younger and Zac appear older
maybe have him not shave for the movie and be all scruffy
change his style and dress him in clothes for the older crowd

Zac's clothes is where the book's descriptiveness will come in. I mean I can picture him so clearly in the cemetery clothing. I'm not sure they'd have to have him look too scruffy. I mean, by the way the book goes, the character is an attractive person. Maybe have him have a little scruff, but not too much.

Sensory details is right. Whooohooohooo. When it came to a cetain scene in the book, wow was that steamy.
They'll either turn that into a montage of quick clips or cut it completely out and leave only a suggestion of what happened.
Finished the book, and if they can stay realatively true to it in the movie, it's gonna be a hell of great movie!
The best part, it's based in real places in Massachusetts. Sure, some liberties were taken, but all of these places in the book exist as the author lived there and did research for this book there.
This is so exciting! I'm totally pumped for this! Anyone who doubts this as a good choice for Zac need only read the book!

Oh I think it will in the movie. But the book certainly didn't spare too many details that's for sure.
Depending on the rating, they'll either go to black or do a montage of clips from that scene. Can't think of a good movie example right now to compare it with. I think you get the idea though.

It's only really that one scene that'll be interesting to see what they do with it.
Whole story is great. And it just validates what I've been saying about this role, this is the kind of role he needed and not Footloose.
I'm more pumped then ever to see this film! And if done right and released smartly, could garner some serious Oscar consideration(s).

If they make the book and leave THAT scene in, I would expect it to be rated 15 in the UK, the classification below that is 12A (A = adult has to accompany children) 17 Again was 12A, but think that would be too low for this film, with or without the scene.
But these days you can never tell!
I have to say I was kinda disappointed when I heard the Zac wasn't doing the Footloose remake, but this does look like a great career move. There would always be a danger of him being typecast. This film seems completely different from anything else he has ever been in and as someone said- may lead to some Oscar recognition.

It would be too bad if it were rated R (US system don't know what it is in the UK) because the book itself is not anywhere near an R rating. What age and above is a rated R film for? UK 15 is obvious as I assume PG-13 means no-one under 13 unless with an adult.
The reason I don't think it would be 12A here is because there were really young children taken to see 17 Again in my local cinema, and this film is not for kids that young with or without that scene they would not understand it, and it's not a childrens book.

Nope. We go from PG-13 straight to R. I would imagine that they'd go for PG-13 and they can still get away with some pretty sexual stuff in that rating. They won't get a PG. And I'd doubt it would get an R because parents wont take their younger ones to it.

This is going to take up some room and time. Here is part one of Ch. 25
Chapter 25
“Would you ever leave Sam?”
Tess’s question lingered in the glow of thee fireplace. Perhaps they were simply in denial about the facts or maybe hey were swept away by each other, but they had abandoned the gloomy subject of the shipwreck and ere dreaming out loud about what life would bee like together.
“Would you ever leave the cemetery?” Tess asked. Her face as tucked into Charlie’s neck. “I mean, would you ever come with me around the world?” She couldn’t believe she was asking the question, but it was true. She didn’t want to go solo anymore. She wanted to be with him.
“You’ve never seen me sail,” he said. “Be careful what you wish for.”
“Don’t joke. I’m being serious.” Then she found herself asking a question that seemed almost too direct: “Are you going to stay here forever with Sam?”
Charlie stroked her hair. “Remember that bullfighting book I told you about?” She nodded. “There’s a pass called al allimon where two matadors challenge the bull [together]. It’s suicide unless they're in perfect harmony. In Spain, they say that only two brothers know each other’s thoughts and movements well enough to pull it off.”
“You and Sam.”
“I couldn’t face life without him.”
He kissed her softly on the forehead, and she felt safe enough to ask once more, “So what about us? What’s going to happen to you and me?”
He pulled her closer. “trust your heart/ if the seas catch fire,” he whispered, reciting the poem from her father’s funeral.
“(and live by love/ though the stars walk backward),” she answered.
“That’s what I want to do with the time we have left.” He kissed her gently on the cheek. Then he whispered, “Come with me.”
He slipped from the couch and stood up.
More coming...
Steamy scene??/ Oooh please share :)

part 2
Tess watched him beckon and she didn’t know what ttoo do. One candle was still burning on the coffee table. The fire was out. The room was silent.
“Come up stairs,” he said. “I won’t bite.”
“We can’t.” Tess said as the sadness returned. “It’s impossible. I couldn’t even knock on the door. I’m not really here.”
“Can you feel this?” he said, leaning forward and kissing her on the corner of her eye.
“Of course.”
“Can you feel this?” he said, running his hands across her shoulders and down to her breasts.
“Yes.”
“You’re still in between. You haven’t crossed over yet. Anything is possible.’
“Pretty smooth,” she said. “So is this how you get into a ghost’s pants?” She poked him in the ribs. Then he took the candle from the table and crossed the living room. “This way,” he said.
Tess followed through the darkness, up a steep staircase, down a little hall into his room. It was small and cozy, with a vaulted ceiling and exposed beams. A big craftsman bed took up almost all the space. He set the candle on the nightstand.
In the low light she could see Charlie take off his T-shirt and dive onto the bed. Below his muscled chest and stomach, his sweatpants were enticingly low on his waist. A small par of her wanted to play hard to get and make him work. It was a reflex from years of experience and disappointment. But that was ridiculous. This wasn’t the time for games. It was now or never.

Only warming up with the last part. Continue:
“Tell me the truth,” she said. “Have you ever done something like this before?”
“You mean sleep with a spirit on the second date?” He was flashing that incredible dimple.
“Don’t push your luck pal.” She pulled the clip from mher hair, and it fell around herr shoulders. She began to unbutton her shirt. And suddenly she noticed. The lines of her hands were softer. Her skin was fainter. Even the feeling of her clothes was different. Everything was less substantial. It took a moment to process, but then she realized.
She was beginning to fade away.
It filled her with pure terror. This was really, truly the end. Soon she would evanesce to nothing. It made no sense. Sam had promised the timing would be her decision. She had made up her mind: She didn’t want to go yet. She wanted to stay right there with Charlie.
“Hey, what’s taking so long?” he said.
“Calm down boy.” She didn’t know what to do, but there he was with his arms open. And so she finished the last buttons of her shirt and kicked off her shoes. She dashed over to the bed and blew out the candle. She didn’t want him to see her this way. She didn’t want him to know it was already happening.
Then she dived onto him, feeling his warmth against her own. Their fingers touched, and they were together, his arms encircling her waist, her hands moving around his neck. Their kiss was deep, connecting, like a familiar story with a beginning, middle and end. They caught their breath, and then she kissed his forehead, face, and shoulders.
Now her hands were on his chest, her fingers gliding along the faint ridges of hat seemed like scars. “What’re these from,” she asked.
“Burn marks when the paramedics shocked me.”
She kissed each one gently and then moved lower, gliding her mouth over his stomach and hips, untying his sweatpants, sliding them off.
more to come. Now we're heating up.

Here's some more:
Then her hands wrapped around him, all heat and power, and she reveled in a new discovery; He was the most perfect man she had ever touched.
She didn’t want to let go, but he rolled her over onto her back, unzipped her jeans, and in one fluid motion lifted her up to pull them off. His strength was impressive, and his instincts were very, very good.
He handled her as if she was weightless, and her anxiety began to melt away. After kissing for the longest time, they began to fold into each other slowly and smoothly, ad she felt him fill her completely. For the first time ever, venturing deeper, Tess lost her sense of where she ended and he began.
When it was over, they held on to each other with all their strength. Tess was afraid even to loosen her grip. She was clinging to love and life. Soon Charlie was ready again, and they found their rhythm. This time she dissolved into a sublime state that she had not even known inn her younger, wilder days. With sparks between every synapse and energy in every cell, the sensation was surreal, like the bliss she had always dreamed of ad had almost given up hope of ever finding.
Afterward, with Charlie resting his head on her stomach, she fet the tears begin to we up, then spill.
“Please don’t cry,” he said.
“I can’t help it. I want to stay here with you. I don’t want to go.’
“Don’t worry,” he said. “There’s no rush.”
But in the shadowed bedroom, he had not seen her fading form. She ran her hands through his hair and rubbed his sinuous back. She pulled him towards her once more. She didn’t want to waste a single moment. There was no time to rest or for sleep, for in hherr heart and soul she knew they would only have tonight.
There’s no rush…
The lies we tell ourselves, Charlie thought as hee kissed her nape and followed the muscles of her neck down to her shouldeerrs and breasts. He cupped one and then the other. They were so warm in his hands, and then in his mouth.

Here is the final part of the chapter:
She was right there – arching, twisting beneath him – and yet he knew this rapture was fleeting, and it only made him more ravenous. He ran his tongue along her ribs, over her stomach, down her sides, marveling at her nooks and curves. He kissed the points of her hips, then her thighs, and she curled up in giggles.
“No fair,” she said.
“All’s fair,” he answered.
Earlier, when she had flopped on the bed ad they had joined together, it had felt like some mysterious experiment. Could they really touch, let alone make love? Was this even possible? With disbelief and tentativeness, they had pushed against each other, like force fields, a flurry of friction and energy, mouth against mouth, hand vs. hand.
Now, this time, as he eased into her again, they merged ineffably. The resistance was gone, and so was the distance. Their bodies coalesced in ways he could not fathom, and the sensation was stirring and soulful.
And so, sweeping aside the impossibility of their union, Charlie pushed deeper and deeper and deeper into her until he was completely gone.
So, there you have it folks.

Thanks for clearing up the cinema classification question. It must prove tricky having no age between PG-13 & R, no wonder we hear about films being reclassified sometimes when they are given an R.
Thanks to Chris for posting THAT chapter from the book. I have read the book, and think it should stay in the film. Not just because everyone wants to see Zac with his kit off!! ;)
When you read that chapter in context with the book it is actually needed, and is telling and moving the story forward. They can't take one little sex scene out, which in fact is beautifully written in the book.

That's the one thing about this book that really makes it interesting. EVERYTHING has a meaning in it. It's not a long book, so it's like the author just cut out all the fluff and really got down to the details.
I agree, this has to be in the movie given it's context. You can still have a steamy sex scene in a PG-13 movie. I mean, Titanic had a couple of scenes, Pearle Harbor had one. That is a beautifully written scene and from the responses, it's one people want to see kept in.

I am not sure if they have held any auditions for these other roles or they have approached certain actors or actresses? I am really excited for Zac to get in this new type of role so we have some type of comparison from his previous movies. I do hope in the future that he plays a role where he is a bad *** or is a bit controversial as he seems to always play the likable character...it would be nice for him to change it up....just a thought.

I'm sure he will. At this point though, he even said that he couldn't be taken seriously if he went right into a badass role.
The way I see this happening:
Idealy, I'd like to see Me and Orson Welles get a wide release in October. That gives him two completely different transition movies away from Disney and would make The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud all the more better. If Me and Orson Welles doesn't get a wide release (or one at all) the St. Cloud will be an interesting leap for him with the audience.
To me, Me and Orson Welles is the key to the success of St. Cloud. Welles is a dramatic film as is St. Cloud. But St. Cloud is a much larger leap from Disney and 17 Again.
Just my thoughts.

I do agree he needs to have a strategy where he transitions well from each role and I do hope Me and Orson Welles gets a wide release but we haven't even heard that much about this movie and it did quite well at TIFF? I guess I am a bit anxious to actually see this movie and seems like it is taking forever.
For me I am just a little tired of seeing Zac in the hearthrob type roles and want to see him where they actually showcase his true talent..... I would like to see him change it up a bit. I know eventually he is going to try and play every type of role imaginable and it is still early in his career. I am excited for him and his future and wish him all the best.

I completely agree with you. Me and Orson Welles has to be seen before St. Cloud, but the obvious problem as we know is MAOW may not get a big release. As it's had a trailer in UK cinemas I would hope for a general release here.
The main reason MAOW has to come first is Zac is playing younger then his own age in that film again (Richard Samuels is 17 if I'm correct) and St. Cloud will be the first serious film playing his own age or slightly older so has to be seen after all the "teenage" roles to move his career on to the next level.
This film is going to be a big leap in the world of movie making and leading man status.

Yup. Zac got a little bit of that 'leading man status' with 17 Again, but St. Cloud will really thrust him out there as you said.

It makes perfect sense. Casting the right actors round Zac is crucial to this film and I'm sure they will get it right. We have faith in Burr Steers et al.
I also hope they sell it right, and don't just make it "Zac's" film for promotion like with 17 Again. It's the only thing that has annoyed me about the release of 17 Again. I know the backers wanted to get the tween audience probably for the last time for a Zac film, but apart from the US he did all the promoting solo. I just hope he does not have to do that for St. Cloud, this film needs the main leads involved with it's promotion.

Agree 100%! Unfortunately you'll still see him out all over the world promoting this thing. Let's face it, unless there's another big name in this movie, Zac is the biggest marketing machine there is. And let's not forget, Zac was fully involved with the marketing for 17 Again because he had alot riding on that movie.
Casting is going to be so crucial. They're going to have to find just the right people for these roles. Sam is going to be important and even more so is the role of Tess. I almost envision a Renee Zelwiger type actress only younger. I can't think of one right now.
Emmy Rossum was mentioned in this thread, but I don't think she's the right fit. Nor do I think Anne Hathaway is right either. The thing with Tess is, she's a sailor so she isn't necessarily a 'girly girl' but isn't really a tom-boy either. We don't want the audience thinking "oh look, there's so and so playing a sailor with zac efron." No, we want them to forget the actress is playing a sailor. I'm really trying to rack my brain and I just can't think of one.

Nah, Zac is fine where he is. The real way for Zac to transition himself is to continue taking photos with naked models and without a shirt. Continue to not bath for a month straight so people think that he is edgy. That's the way to do it.
When people speak about Zac they still say "Disney's Zac Efron" and until that stops nothing is going to change. If any of you know anything at all, it takes more than a couple of movies for that to happen. You all think "hey it's not a disney movie he should go for it". Zac still has a ways to go.

your pathetic. is it necessary for you to criticize everything he does? hes lazy...thats why he doesnt cut his hair and probably doesnt shower every single day when hes just at home. i doubt he doesnt shower cause he wants to seem edgy. esp cause he SAID he showers...your making yourself look like an idiot.

By all means, state your opinion. We'll be able to figure it out. This is an important subject.
I was really excited when i knew about MAOW because i know that's gonna be a good movie, not only cinematically speaking, but thanks to the subject too.
It has been a challenge for Zac, but even more a challenge for the audience and the movie critics, because it will be evident that he deserves a certain consideration.
As you said MAOW maybe won't be easily released, and besides - for what i understood, i haven't read the book yet - Charlie st. Cloud is an even more challenging character. He doesn't play a child, he doesn't sing, and he's not the pretty boy (even if he's a good lookin character that's not the main attribute, is it?).
I think it's time to show which the real gift, which is not dancing, or singing (i love his performances of course), but especially, which is not beauty.
Everyone knows he's handsome, everyone knows he can sing, everyone knows he can dance.
He deserves to come out as a real and valid actor.
As we already know he is.

Well said! Yes, Me and Orson Welles is a key for Charlie St. Cloud to help move Zac further away from that "all-singing, all-dancing" actor. He clearly has talent and The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud will showcase this beautifully.

I do not live my life wanting Zac to do anything, I do not care. You should really stop focusing so much on what I say. I do not need to be satisfied with Zac, that's is of no importance to me. It's called an opinion, dictionary.com, look it up :)
I don't need a dictionary to know what an opinion is..I just think that you could omit (is it right?) it if it's something negative, since you're on a Zac fan forum. to say something bad sometimes, ok, but you say bad things about him/his career in every post you do. It's kinda difficult not to focus on what you say, cause you're everywhere in the forum. And if you don't care, why you're always here? I really don't understand.

I heard that the young actress Emmy Rossum would be play the role of Tess ...
It's not confirm I believe
I'm sure it will be a great cast... the director won't let Zac down I'm sure.
