View Full Version : "Footloose" Remake
Kathryn

The following has been confirmed. Zac is no longer doing the Footloose remake.
It seems Zac Efron isn't ready to put his dancing shoes back on just yet.
A source tells ET that the tween heartthrob has pulled out of 'Footloose,' a remake of the 80's classic about a newcomer who rails against anti-music laws and teaches a town to dance.
The updated version will be helmed by Kenny Ortega, who directed Zac in all three "High School Musical" productions.
Shooting was slated to begin this spring for a 2010 release, however, Zac's departure may not affect filming. "'Footloose' is a project we've longed to see re-booted for a new generation," a rep for Paramount Pictures tells ET. "While Zac is no longer attached, we remain excited and committed to the collective brain trust of Kenny Ortega, Neil Meron and Craig Zaden, who will reinvigorate the franchise. Their fresh take on the film will undoubtedly be filled with the same kind of breakout performances that we've come to expect from them."

Thanks for the information Kathryn. Bit :( I have to say. I love the original Footloose and would of loved to see Zac fil the role. But if its not to be, then nothing we can really say.
One thing though, remakes dont always work - guess we will have to wait and see if the decision is right or not. I trust Zac's ability to make his own decision and Im sure it will be the right one for him :)

Maybe he just wants to take a little break to rest. Ya' know? He's been traveling and fliming things nearly everything week for about a year. =/ Maybe spend time with Dylan and his parents?

Paramount themselves confirmed it. It saddens me that Zac would drop out of a movie like that. It's very unprofessional of him, and shows that he can't always be trusted. That when he no longer wants to do it he will just quit. Which can hurt him in the long run. Even worse he had script approval so it sorta seems like Zac can't make a wise decision.
He's gonna be questioned and asked why he dropped out, some of you may remember the heat "what's his face from entourage" received after dropping out of the play he was supposed to be in.
Keep it up Zac, keep it up.
and may I add, Kathryn isn't stupid, she isn't going to post something in the "latest OFFICIAL news" thread unless it was true.
Though, you must know no one, not even Kathryn knows everything about Zac, so it doesn't matter who says what some things may be true and others may not be. (this is true though).

In all honesty I was sort of the fence about this project due to the fact it was being considered by many as a musical? I personally (and this is only my opinion) think he needs to step back from the lights for just a little bit.....maybe go back to SLO for a while and really evaluate what he truly wants his future to look like in this industry because in all honesty this type of industry can literally chew you up and spit you back out without thinking twice about it!! I just question his timing on things that have happened with him in the last week and if the people he is surrounding himself have his best interest at heart (I think he nees to seek some advice from the ones that know him best.....Mom and Dad)??? I think just of late he seems very confused and not his happy carefree self!! I think he is promoting a film that he stars in and it seems to be a good film but at the same time he should be having the time of his life because this is what you work up for ultimately in the end to have a successful film career and have everyone go see your movie with box office success!!! I hope he does figure things out on his own terms because sometimes there can be a lot noise surrounding you confusing things evern more or influencing your decisions that could ultimately have you loose what you worked sooo hard for!!! I hope Zac much success for the future and see his great smile back soon!!!

Thats the stupidest thing Zac could do
He won't have a future in the industry if he leaves.
At the moment his career is booming
If he leaves now for a year or two
he'll be forgotten straight away
At the moment he is being offered movie roles
If he leaves and comes back
he will have to audition along with all the other thousands of hopefuls

I totally support Zac in whatever he chooses to do. I trust there was good reason for his decision (presuming it was his choice) not to do this movie and though I was personally looking forward to seeing it, I'm not going to think any differently of him.
Who knows maybe there's something else he's signed up for?

Talk about jumping on the negativity wagon. You may see it as unprofessional, but when a studio gives a picture's star script approval and they don't like what they see so they choose to leave, that's the studio's problem. As unprofessional as it may be let's look at some factors here:
Paramount wanted to start production on the film later THIS spring. - I would think that would be kind of hard to do given that NONE of the other parts had been cast and Zac was the only actor linked to the movie
Zac had script approval. - The studio took a big risk in giving that to a young star that has been linked to this project since 2007. Clearly after the last rewrite Zac saw something he didn't like and made a professional decision not to do it.
Can this come back to bite him in the ***? - It certainly could. I think that people have jumped too quickly onto the negativity track here. From everything I've read, Zac and the studio parted ways amicably. He didn't just show up one day out of the blue and say "I'm done with this!" I'm certain there were discussions that took place between the two parties and ultimately it will come down to creative differences. And saying that it was unprofessional for him to pull out this close to starting production, look back at number 1. He was the ONLY cast actor for this movie.
He's just doing this to make a statement or act more serious. - I don't think so. I think he genuinely didn't like the direction the film was going and decided that he didn't want to do it.
The biggest looser, at this point, is not Zac but Paramount. Having Zac in this version of Footloose gave the film an almost instantaneous fanbase. People were quite excited to see this film and how he would step into the role. Without him in it, the film's popularity has already dropped. Many fans of the original movie don't want to see it be remade. Now, if the film goes on and is a flop he'll be viewed as a smart person. On the other hand, if it is a major success, then this will be a big mistake.
Right now, he's coming across to some as being ahead in this. Others are questioning his motives as to why he is doing this and his methods as of late. I'm falling in the first caolumn.

^^^ Uh Zac was signed to the movie buddy, but he dropped the contract because he found a loophole that allowed him to do it. THAT IS UNPROFESSIONAL, he read the script signed on to do it and then dropped out after they were set.
He has obviously forgotten that Kevin Bacon, who is now super famous got his big break from Footloose. Footloose was the HSM of the 70's I believe, so it already has a fanbase. All the teen fans from back then are now in their 40's and would probably go see the remake. Zac wants grown up fans, and well doing this movie would have exposed him to those older people.
Paramount lost out? Uhm there's tons of other guys they can cast who are more talented then Zac, I think they will survive.

Footloose was actually done in the 80s, 'Grease' was the HSM of the 70s. The loophole that you speak of is in ANY 'script approval' contract. He saw a rewrite of the script that he didn't like and chose not to continue on the project, that was his perogative given to him in his contract by the studio.
I find it funny how you can say they "were set," yet the only cast actor in the movie was Zac. How do you propose starting production on a film that should have many characters, and only ONE has been cast? That to me doesn't sound "set." It's Hollywood, that's the business many other have done this and many will continue to do so.
I'd like you to name a few of those who could bring the star power to Footloose and give it instantaneous success. I mean this seriously. Because alot of people were drawn to see this remake BECAUSE they wanted to see what Zac could do with the role. Many of the fans of the original don't even see the need to remake Footloose. Zac is taking flak right now even though hundreds of other actors have done the same thing.
Both sides parted amicable and did so in a professional manner.

Okay I wasn't born in the 80's therefore I wouldn't know when it was made, nor do I care. No with script approval, you read the script you are given, if you agree to it and you like it you sign onto the project, which Zac did. He then must of had change of heart and dropped out. A loophole means that normally he wouldn't have been able to drop out but he found way, which is unprofessional by any standards.
Zac was supposed to be the main character, and by set I mean set as Zac signed on. Yet again please continue to read into things that aren't even there.
Just because Zac is signed, does not mean instantaneous success. The Jonas, who are arguably 10 times more famous then him thought the exact same thing would happen with their movie, and well we saw how that flopped. If anything that was one of the only reasons Zac was casted because of the fanbase. Though, I don't measure success by how many 13 year old girls swoon over someone. The people who wanted to see Zac do the role was his fans, and that's about it.
Even though some of the original Footloose's fans didn't see the need to remake they most likely still would have saw it. In thirty years if they made a remake of HSM you know you'd go see it because it would bring back childhood memories. I mean if Zac is really all that great he would have been out doing bigger movies by now.

Well, I was born in the 80s and it does matter when your discussing a film and it's context.
"Yet again continue to read into things that aren't there." How in the hell is ANYONE supposed to know what you meant if you don't spell it out. I can only read what is in black and white and you weren't clear enough. If you said "set, as in he signed on to be the main character" then I'd get it. Don't write something then expect people to instantly understand what you're talking about and when they don't, then don't go dropping cr@p simply because you feel that somehow you can because THEY are supposed to be telepathically linked to you and get instantly what you meant. It don't work that way.
The loophole that you talk about is in EVERY 'script approval' contract! He saw the rewrite and decided not to do the movie. That was an option that was given to him by Paramount and he excersized that option. You may think it unprofessional, but it wouldn't be in there for all these types of contracts and agreed upon if it weren't professional. The act of leaving a movie may not be professional, but the out that he took was done legally and professionally.
And thank you for contradicting your self by saying that the film doesn't have instant succes because of Zac, yet he was cast because of his fanbase. thank you for agreeing with me. Zac probably is not cast if he didn't have a large fanbase that gives what ever he does instant success to start. How you measure success doesn't amount to a hill of beans to Paramount and the receipt counters. If those swooning 13 year old girls go and buy a ticket to see the movie over and over and over and the movie makes gobs of money, then it's a success.
"I mean if Zac is really all that great he would have been out doing bigger movies by now."
Then why do you even bother being on this board! You clearly don't think he's all that great, so why bother. I have seen absolutely nothing positive come out of you regarding Zac in the short time that I have been patroning this board and quite frankly it's annoying.

There's a poll here (http://my.cineplex.com/showbiz-news/2009/03/zac-efron-drops-out-footloose-remake/) asking people what they think this will mean overall for his career path and it's interesting to see what everyone thinks.

So you're obviously a professional actor, who has been acting for ages and know everything about the industry. Or at least you think you know everything. I didn't contradict myself. Zac was cast in HS and 17 again and would have been in Footloose because they know he has a big fanbase. But that doesn't mean the movie would be a success. With the Jonas example I used, proves that, it doesn't matter how famous you are or how many fans you have.
No one measures success by how many 13 year olds swoon over you, because if so people like Jack Black wouldn't be considered successful. Though you must have the mentality of a 13 year old if that's what you think.
This is a Zac Efron fan forum, I am a fan, thus I post here. I've been here longer and people have learned to deal with the negativity that I put out. I express my opinions in a truthful manner. If you can't handle it then why are you on this forum? You were born in the 80's so you should be mature enough to know that not everyone is going to say" omg i love zac and everything he does". I am a fan of Zac's not because of the movies he's in but because of the person he is.
No I don't think he's great. I am not friends with Zac, nor do I know Zac. Therefore I cannot form an actual opinion about him, thus I cannot be all OMG HES AMAZING!
The fact that you think you know everything, and that you go around posting long *** coments to make people think you're smart is annoying. People get banned for that sort of high all mighty power blabble! If you have an opinion great, BUT YOUR NOT RIGHT. So stop acting like you are! I don't care how long you make your comments.

Putting up with negativity is part of life. I do it on a daily basis. Hell, I used to be as negative as you seem to be. You know what, I grew up and have a much better sense of the world and how things work. And yes, smart alec, I have done work in both major pictures and in documentary; work on both sides of the camera, so in this instance I do know.
Again, studios couldn't give a damn about how old someone is that goes to see a movie, as long as they buy a ticket that's all they care about. Movies succeed based on the quality of the story and the actors (star power) involved. So, yeah I guess I am wrong when I say a person is cast in a movie who clearly has hudreds of thousands of fans that are willing to see him/her in anything they do, would make a movie successfull. Interesting rationale.
For the record, I don't expect you to say "OMG Zac is so perfect." Express your opinions, but do so in a manner that isn't so blatent. I have seen you call people idots and other things. Granted, it's probably sarcasm and sarcasm doesn't really translate well in writing. The fac you may think I'm wrong is in your opinion. I don't always act as though I'm right. If I post something in a forcefull manner, that's because I know it to be fact. You know why I have long posts? Because words have meaning. An explanation goes a lot farther than some quick quip and expecting people to understand you. It's called crafting an argument. I didn't go to college and then some to look at an argument and quip back "you guys are so stupid" (not saying you did that) because that is a waste of my time. I'd rather explain why I think something right or wrong.
Look, throw everything we've written aside. We agree on somethings and disagree on others. Conflict is not a bad thing. Disagreements are not bad things. So, that being said. I extend the Olive branch of peace. What do you say?
beeee.

Well when you're defending yourself of your POV you have to put in all the topics you were speaking about. Though I don't see how any of this has to do with you.
We were not fighting, nor arguing. We are simply discussing what we think, that's still allowed here right?
Being blatant is apart of my personality. It's who I am and it's who I've always been. I post my opinions, if you like it great if you don't not my problem. I will not stop posting what I think or feel because that's what this forum is about.
Most of the time when I call people idiots is because their acting like ones. I do not call people names unless they are presenting themselves in a matter that makes them seem that way.
Think Zac is perfect and has never cussed in his life, makes you seem like an idiot (not saying you said that) that's when I tell them the truth.
You tend to come off as "I know what I'm talking about I am right" even though none of us have any clue what is going on with Zac.
beeee.
