Variety reports that Zac Efron (http://broadwayworld.com/galleryperson.cfm?personid=16162), who played Troy Bolton in "High School Musical" and now appears as heartthrob Link Larkin in the film version of Hairspray (http://www.broadwayworld.com/showinfo.cfm?showid=10&viable=1), will star in a remake of the 1984 hit Footloose.
Produced by Dylan Sellars, the film will reunite Efron with "High School Musical" director/choreographer Kenny Ortega (http://broadwayworld.com/galleryperson.cfm?personid=15814), who will have the same duties for Footloose. Efron will play Kevin Bacon (http://broadwayworld.com/galleryperson.cfm?personid=2880)'s role of Ren McCormack, "the rebellious newcomer in a town where dancing has been banned." The new film Footloose will be expanded into a "full-blown movie musical" from the earlier film with songs. Footloose also starred Lori Singer (http://broadwayworld.com/galleryperson.cfm?personid=16262) and John Lithgow (http://broadwayworld.com/galleryperson.cfm?personid=4178). i have a lot to say. and i think this is the best place to say it.

FIRST:
zac is an amazing actor. we all know that.
i have mixed feelings about this whole footloose thing.
i agree with everyone that has said kevin bacon is the only ren.
but i also realize that musical theatre is something zac has been doing for a long time.

i dont want him to be "typecast" even more so than he already is.
everybody sees him as "troy" and him continuing the legacy will eventually make it harder for him to be taken seriously as a drama actor.

SECOND:
as far as HSM3.
i dont support it.
personally, i love HSM. and im sure the second will be great.
BUTTTT.
i know there are a lot of haters, and a third HSM installment will hurt disney more.
for instance, i dont like the cheetah girls.
the second was torture
and now they're making a third and im like "are you kidding me!!!'
and thats how it will be for a lot of HSM-haters if they take the HSM name even further....

cameron from summerland was such a complex character.
and zac NAILED it.

but i dont want to see him do musicals for the rest of his career.
i want to see more "cameron-like" character.
i DEFINITELY support him doing seventeen, if it in fact is one of his projects.
footloose.....notsomuch.

he needs to take a break from musicals for a while. thats just my opinion.
especially remakes.
....but, hey, thats just me.

i will definitely support zac in all his work.
but in order to grow as an actor, i think he needs to take on more dramatic roles.

On Regis and Kelly yesterday, Zac and Regis both said that it's just talk now, it may happen. According to Regis, "It probably will happen." I'm not sure if they'll do a whole world wide search for the cast like they did for Hairspray, but I do suggest, if you wanna get out there get to LA and get discovered quick. :) It'll probably be a good three years before it even comes out to theatres, but I do think it'll be good. If Amanda Bynes sings well in Hairspray tomorrow, I think she'd be a perfect Rusty and Ashley Tisdale would be a great Wendy Jo.

I don't like Vanessa Anne Hudgen's voice at all so hopefully she won't be in it. She sounds really off-key in HSM and it bothers me so much. We did HSM in school this year and our Gabriella was so much better.

when i heard about this, i got my friend to lend me footloose (the original version) and i would just like to say that watching ren (the character zac will be playing) just made me smile because he is PERFECT for the role. i cannot wait !! and now that i know zac will be playing the part im def gonna buy the soundtrack to the original movie!:)

the original is really good and everyone should go see it! just try to picture zac playing the lead character ... HES PERFECT!

Do you guys think he is to squeaky clean for this role? People on the IMBD boards thinks he is and they think that he is not going to be good in the role. Someone thinks that Zac Efron playing Ren is a disgrace to Kevin Bacon. That is total BS if you ask me. Someone is not going to see it if he plays Ren because they think that Zac is going to remake the role. Zac said so himself that he is not trying to take over Kevin Bacon's role in the orginial. (I forgot where I saw that sorry).

Anyway I am going to see this because I know that Zac will be totally awsome in this and as do everyone else on this forum.
