The coming-of-age of ZAC EFRON in ‘CHARLIE ST. CLOUD’
COUP DE MAIN: First of all, congratulations on your new film ‘Charlie St. Cloud’! It’s a very moving story. What was running through your mind the first time that you read the script?
ZAC EFRON: Thank you. Thank you very much! The first time I read the script, it was kind of too good to be true because I happened to be spending the night on my Dad’s sailboat just to sort of change things up. When I opened the script, I didn’t know it was about sailing. It just had the name on it: ‘Charlie St. Cloud’. But when I flipped it open, the first thing was the sailboat race. And there I was, on the front-deck of a really nice sailboat. And as soon as I started to read into the race, I remember, the wind kind of picked up. And I was like: ‘Wow!’ It was kind of like in ‘The NeverEnding Story’ or something. It was kind of weird!
CDM: I guess like all good things in life, it was meant to be… ZAC: Yeah exactly – well put!
CDM: What drew you to play the character of Charlie St. Cloud? ZAC: His emotional journey. He has a close relationship with his brother and I can relate to that as well. And then the way that he becomes withdrawn, is just… I could sympathize with it, but at the same time, I didn’t know if I could actually achieve that. It seemed like a harder cast than just another musical or something like that – it would be a new experience for me. And that was the other intriguing side of it.
CDM: Having a younger brother yourself, did that give you some helpful insight to draw upon? ZAC: It did indeed. I just had a whole lifetime of memories to think about my little bro. So I called into it often. I just thought about all the good times we had and what it would be like without him and that was a pretty strong emotional trigger for me.
CDM: After watching the film last week, I longed to steal Tess’ boat and sail off into the sunset… did you ever feel that urge too? ZAC: Oh yeah – oh man! Every day. Especially after a long press tour. I think it would be a great way to see the world, on a sailboat. Something about getting there on the power of the wind, is empowering. It feels organic and it feels liberating.

It was the hardest phone call of his life. Buoyed by the global success of the Disney High School Musical phenomenon, Zac Efron was poised for an easy kill. All he had to do was say “yes” to the remake of Footloose. It would net him a lazy $10 million, be a sure-fire hit and establish him as a stand-alone marquee name. It was a no-brainer.
And everybody expected him to do it, especially his HSM director Kenny Ortega, who was set to helm the film. But Efron wanted to run his own race, be his own man. He’d already signaled as much with his self-spoofing appearances on Saturday Night Live, Robot Chicken and Entourage. So, mid-2009, he called Ortega and said what nobody wanted to hear.
“It was a very hard decision,” Efron recalls. “It was one of the first times I’ve ever, in my life, just . . .” He trails off, then pauses. Efron, 22, is here promoting his new film, the quality weepie Charlie St Cloud. But right now, lightly bearded and shifting uncomfortably in a Sydney hotel room chair, his head is inside the moment.
“It was the first time I made a decision based on what I felt in my heart. Everyone had geared me to do what was [supposed to be] the right decision. So, for the first time, it was like me against the world.” He pauses again. He’s glad he went with his instincts but also knows he upset a lot of people, particularly Ortega, who — sans his leading man — promptly pulled out of the picture.
“Yeah, it sucks, man,” Efron says. “I mean, I put a lot of friggin’ work into that film, too. I remember racking my brain trying to figure it out and how it could some way work.
“But every time I looked in the mirror it was like” — he pauses — ” ‘This is the first time I’m going to have to be selfish. I’ve got to do something for me. I’ve got to see how far I can take this. I know that I can do that. I know that I can pull it off and it would be great and very lucrative and incredibly fun — but at the end of the day is that what I’m here to do?’ ”

Zac Efron is developing his career post High School Musical through a careful choice of roles, including his latest in Charlie St. Cloud. The one question Zac Efron gets asked more than any other is whether he feels as though he needs to prove himself.
“As a result of getting involved at a young age, that’s sort of what the game has become now,” says the newly hirsute actor, in Australia to promote his romantic drama Charlie St. Cloud. Efron was hardly surprised, then, when his decision to sport a beard for the red-carpet premiere was interpreted by the world’s media as some kind of statement.
“When it’s just, in fact, facial hair,” he says. But since the former High School Musical star has his sights set on making the difficult transition to credible dramatic actor, he is determined to weather such personal indignities with as much aplomb as he can muster.
For the record, Efron is trying the beard on for size in preparation for his next role – as a US Marine who returns to North Carolina, after serving three tours in Iraq, to search for the unknown woman he believes was his good luck charm.

MEETING heart-throb Zac Efron yesterday was great news for young Olivia Wall. But it wasn’t the best news. “While it’s nice that Zac’s here to visit, we got the really good news yesterday that her cancer is in remission,” Shoshana Wall said.
The High School Musical star made a low-key visit to the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick and won the hearts of patients like Olivia, their parents and the staff. Efron, in Sydney for the premiere of his latest film Charlie St Cloud, spent an hour with the children in the cancer ward.
The star was friendly and relaxed with six-year-old Olivia, an ardent Efron fan who has non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The first-grader was happy to hug Efron and read her favourite picture book – High School Musical. “What a coincidence,” Efron joked.
Asked by Efron who was her favourite characters, Olivia replied “Sharpay” (Ashley Tisdale), an answer that brought a few chuckles. “She’s one of my favourites too,” Eftron said. He leaves Sydney for Los Angeles today.
